WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT OUR SOAPS?
We truly believe in natural, sustainable ingredients, small family businesses and shopping local. But using natural handmade soap not only benefit small business owners and the community, it has amazing benefits for your skin and your overall health.
Commercial soap isn't what it used to be. Even the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proclaim that "Today there are few true soaps in the market. Most body cleansers, both liquid and solid, are actually synthetic detergent products”.
Real soap is made by combining fats or oils and an alkali, such as lye. The fats and oils (which here at Eden Daily Essentials we use plant oils & butters) are degraded into free fatty acids, which then combine with the alkali to form raw soap. The lye reacts with the oils, turning what starts out as liquid into blocks of soap, and no lye remains in the finished product. This process is called saponification. The result is a combination of soap and glycerin.
OUR RECIPE
There are many different “recipes” for handmade soaps, and we are very proud of ours! During this process, soap makers can decide how moisturizing they want the soap to be, with what we call “super fat”. Most soap makers keep the super fat on their soaps low, so the soap can dry faster and they can sell quickly. Because our founder's skin issues, our recipe has a higher super fat, which takes a bit longer to cure the soap, but it gives you an extra moisturizing bar, even compared with other handmade soaps.
But how does super fat actually work?
When we use shea butter, for example, the super fat will leave elements of shea in the soap, using olive oil will leave elements of olives, and so on. Nothing should be removed and no synthetic chemicals should be added.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH COMMERCIAL SOAPS?
Mass-produced commercial soaps (detergent products, actually) do not have the most valuable ingredient, glycerin, from the saponification process.
Glycerin is a natural humectant and it attracts moisture to the skin and it has soothing properties. Many large commercial soap manufacturers separate the glycerin from the soap to sell or use in other more expensive products. Then, they add synthetic ingredients, detergents, foaming agents, and artificial fragrances to what is left in the “soap” to simulate the properties of what is removed. Couple of these ingredients, for example, are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). They cause dryness in the skin because they strip the moisture and important natural oils from the skin. Also, because they are so harsh on the skin, they can lead to irritation and contribute to many skin issues as eczema, psoriasis, among many others.
